Michelin's stance on the two tire question PDF Print E-mail

For continued optimized vehicle performance, it is recommended that all tires be replaced at the same time.

If only two tires are being replaced, the two newer tires need to be installed on the rear axle, regardless of vehicle
drive type. The new tires with deeper tread will provide better wet grip and evacuate water more effectively - which
helps delay the onset of hydroplaning. Deeper tread tires on the rear axle will help avoid loss of vehicle stability on wet surfaces.

Whenever replacing less than four tires on the vehicle, or any variation from the original equipment tire size or speed rating, consult your tire dealer and the MAST Fitment Guide for recommendations, including tire rotation patterns that may be affected.

Used Cars

I think that cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals: I mean the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population which appropriates them as a purely magical object. --Roland Barthes (1915-80), French semiologist. Mythologies, The New Citroën (1957; tr. 1972).
